Additional, right-on predictions from the Retail Prophet

December 13, 2009
Doug Stephens is the Retail Prophet.  He owns/operates Retail Prophet which is a future focused retail consulting group specializing in work with independent retailers, their buying groups and associations.  He’s an actual retailer turned consultant/guru and I highly recommend networking with him on LinkedIn, following his blog at www.retailprophet.com and following him on Twitter – he’s RetailProphet .  I learn something valuable from Doug every day.  Here’s his response when he received my 2010 Recruiting in Retail in Canada predictions.  I believe they are right-on!

Hi Brenda,
A couple of thoughts for what they’re worth.

1. Look for a glut of qualified entry level workers. Gen Y could be facing up to 50 percent unemployment as they graduate over the next 10-15 years due to the sheer size of their generation relative to the number of positions. Coupled with Baby Boomers holding onto their jobs longer due to the erosion of retirement savings. Employers will have their pick of the best and brightest.

2. The digital divide between generations will become more prevalent in 2010. Older C-Level workers will be challenged to keep up with the sheer speed of innovation. Internships will take on new meaning and value.

3. Companies will place renewed emphasis on growing their multi-cultural employee base, in order to address the explosion of ethnic consumer markets. Canada’s foreign born population for example is growing 4 times faster than its domestic population.

Amazing times!
